Lighting Up the Sky is the upcoming eighth and reportedly final studio album by American rock band Godsmack.[2] It is scheduled to be released on February 24, 2023,[1] and it will be the band's first studio album in nearly five years, since When Legends Rise (2018), making this the longest gap between two studio albums by Godsmack.

While on tour promoting When Legends Rise, news of a follow-up to the album began circulating as early as August 2019 when frontman Sully Erna revealed in an interview with Canada's iHeartRadio that the band has been preparing to begin the songwriting process for the album.[4] Several months later, in a video message dated March 23, 2020, and shared via the Twitter account of SiriusXM, drummer Shannon Larkin and lead guitarist Tony Rambola confirmed the band has been writing music for the album.[5] Shortly after, and during an appearance on Sirius XM Radio's Trunk Nation, Sully Erna admitted that, while his band has been compiling some ideas, he was lacking the inspiration to write anything. Nonetheless, he assured the fans that the new album would be finished sooner than later:
In a May 4, 2021, appearance on The VR Sessions' "Riff On It", Sully Erna revealed that the band has written 12 songs for the album in just three weeks, and that the band was in the process of writing the lyrics and laying down all the melodies.[7] in an April 23, 2022, interview with WJRR, Sully Erna said that the band had recorded the new album with a new single expected to hit the airwaves in mid-to-late summer and that the album could be the band's last.[8]
Sully Erna described the sound of Lighting Up the Sky as "high-voltage, high-energy, hard rock album, packed with melodies, packed with good hooks, big grooves, great guitar solos."[2] He said that it's a "true hard rock record" that's worthy of being the band's last studio album.[2]
Lighting Up the Sky is co-produced by frontman Sully Erna and record producer Andrew Murdock,[1] who is best known for producing the band's first two multi-platinum studio albums Godsmack and Awake,[11] as well as for his work with Avenged Sevenfold and Alice Cooper, among others.[1]
To promote the album, Godsmack released their first single in four years titled "Surrender" on September 28, 2022.[2] The day after, the band held a private listening party at the Circa Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.[12] During the listening party which was attended by roughly sixty radio and media personnel, the band played five songs from the album while frontman Sully Erna talked about the writing and recording process for each one.[13]
Despite frontman Sully Erna suggesting that Lighting Up the Sky would be the band's final studio album, he did not completely close the door at the possibility of releasing new music in the future, stating:
We feel like we've honored our career, our relationships with our fans, and we're always gonna be there for them; we're gonna do shows. But as far as to continue this, after this [album], unless we just decide one day, 'Yeah, one more for the road,' I think this could be it for us with new music.[10]
In response to Erna's comment, Forbes' contributing writer Quentin Singer noted that announcements of "farewell tours" and "final albums" are particularly common in rock music, only for bands to reunite and release new music years down the road.[10]
All Wound Up... is the debut album by American rock band Godsmack.[2][3] It was released independently through the band's own record label, E. K. Records Company, in February 1997.[4] The album was pressed four different times before being picked up by Republic Records/Universal Records in June 1998.[4] It was slightly edited and remixed (with some unlicensed samples removed), fully remastered and given a new artwork and layout, and re-released by the major record labels as Godsmack in August 1998.[2][3][5] The band never considered this to be a demo release; they considered it the same release as Godsmack.[2][3][5]
According to the album's liner notes, frontman Sully Erna performed all of the drums on the album because the band's original drummer, Tommy Stewart, had departed before the recording session.[6] The band's second drummer, Joe D'Arco, only joined after the album was recorded, though he later recorded the bonus track "Whatever" with the band in February 1998.[6] When D'Arco was fired in April 1998, his name was not removed from the 1998 re-presses of the album, but Stewart was eventually given credit when the album was re-issued as Godsmack.
Four different versions of this album exist. The first and the second edition only differ because of a member misprint in the booklet. The misprint of the first edition mentions "Tony" (Rombola) also on drums. That's corrected in the second edition, where you can read "Joe" (D'Arco) on drums. The third edition's characteristic feature is an added bonus CD with the track "Whatever" included on it. The fourth edition differs from all the others in two cases: The hidden track at the end of the eleventh track, "Witch Hunt", is removed and a twelfth track, "Whatever" (also not mentioned elsewhere on the release), is added. "Going Down" later appeared on the soundtrack to the film Mission: Impossible 2 as well as the band's second studio album Awake. 2ff7e9595c
